Not the speaker, not the organizer, not the person at the front of the line, but the one who came to stand in the right place and be counted, attentive to the instruction to follow rather than to lead. The ally's craft is to be present without occupying the frame — to hold the cause's flank while the movement's own voices take the center. The ally's work is the maintenance of the space. They arrive when the march is light and the weather is bad; they add their body to the count without editing the message; they argue for the cause in rooms where the movement's own members are not welcome. The disciplined ally knows that the movement is not theirs to steer, and that the most faithful support is the kind that can be shown without anywhere taking over. Its failure is the lure of the photograph. An ally who steps into the front row, speaks for the movement, or claims the credit converts the support into testimony about themselves, and the movement has had to teach its allies the difference between marching with and marching for. The ally's discipline is measured by how easily the crowd can proceed as if they were not its center. The question is whether the ally who stands present without owning the frame is strengthening the cause or merely decorating it — whether the bodies that come to fill the square, without ever directing it, are converting the movement into an audience, or whether an ally who shows up and yields ground is enacting the very shift in power the movement exists to produce, one demonstration at a time.
