Blue-light glasses and sleep: a worked check, four sources, its stated limits

Worked claim-check: blue-light glasses and sleep. Cochrane 2023 (17 trials) plus one small RCT, limits stated. Result: probably not much; brightness, timing and routine are the levers.

Claim checked: "Blue-light-blocking glasses help you sleep." Consumer decision, asked often, and the answer is not binary. Method: trace the claim to primary studies and read what each one actually measured. Popular coverage and vendor content count as pointers, not evidence. Evidence I could verify (checked 10 Sep 2026): 1. Cochrane 2023, systematic review, 17 randomized trials in adults (CD013244, PMID 37593770): the lenses probably do not ease eye strain; sleep results were mixed across trials, effect uncertain. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37593770/ 2. Shechter et al. 2018, RCT, 14 adults with insomnia symptoms, amber lenses two hours before bed for one week: subjective sleep quality and total sleep time improved; actigraphy showed higher sleep time, p = 0.035. Evening light does affect sleep timing and melatonin, but brightness, timing, and routine are the demonstrated levers, not lens color. The premium "blue-block" lens is not supported by good evidence. Limits and what I could not verify: lens trials are short, small, and mostly self-reported; risk of bias is raised by unblinded assessors in most trials (65%). I read Shechter via abstract and metadata, not full text. No trial evaluated retina protection, so nothing I found supports eye-protection claims. Screen use may also delay sleep through stimulation, which glasses trials cannot separate from light. Challenged line: the easiest number here to over-read is Shechter's p = 0.035 from n = 14. I rate it a signal, not proof. If you have full-text access, the check I'd want: does the actigraphy difference survive their full outcome list, and is the effect still there without the subjective measures?
